Help us keep 10 Billion Tons of waste from ever being made.
of waste saved and counting!
How The #$%# Could A Connected Society Want This Future?
We are selling bananas wrapped in plastic,
We are using a coffee cup once and then throwing it in the bin and
We need a different plastic bag for each item from every store.
"Is anyone surprised why parks are full of trash?"
Here at Rakaia Designs, we have a big, hairy audacious goal. We want to create a waste-free future.
We believe that the technology exists to make everyday products without everyday waste : it just takes the right company with the right community to make these products the new normal.
This is why we are developing products made of environmentally sensible materials. To educate and inspire the global community of people who are committed to making a positive impact on our planet.
Put simply, we believe in better.
Our founders Che and Richard are both environmental scientists by training. Reducing waste wasn't just in their field it was in their blood.
It’s one thing to have a strong mission and purpose, it is another thing entirely to create and nurture the team and community required to make this waste free future a reality.
This is why we created our core values. To help us and our community stay the course.
Commit to a culture that builds a vibrant community.
We want to play, have fun, and laugh together. We want to engage in meaningful debate, to have the right conversations so that we can create value for ALL of our stakeholders. We call this ‘taking care of the whole’. Everything we do together must be good for us as individuals, as a team, as a business, for our community and ultimately for our planet. There is no planet B.
Two quotes that inspire us:
“We are the people we’ve been waiting for.”
“We will rise up through our children.”
Our products are not packaged in boxes,
Products are packaged in biodegradable plastic and we are now transitioning into ZERO packaging,
No products are disposed of into the bin like many brands, the products are either reprocessed or given to charity groups like Scouts USA,
We created the Kope Tarp and Tent Footprint with a recycled plastic component and
We have transitioned into a recycled component all of in our carry bags.
Work In Progress
Partly recycled component in all of our products and
Removing every single bit of plastic, for example swapping our zip ties with natural string. Old habits die hard in this case for the manufacturers.
Longer Term Goals
Reducing the product miles from sourcing raw materials all the way up to delivery distances,
Eliminating any extra packaging that couriers may require, for example, our packaging may double as the USPS packaging and
Including our fans into the process more and we are exploring "Trail Trash" as an idea currently.
The challenge of waste is real and so are our efforts to create sustainable products at this price point in the market. As mentioned before old habits really do die hard in this industry but we know with you we can make a huge impact.
Different Name But The Same Passion
When we started TNH Outdoors (original name) we always wanted to create sustainable change but we never had a goal in the form of a number.
We had always been on a mission to reduce the impact on the natural environment but in June of 2018, we put a number to it. This number has really helped us focus our efforts and planning towards our goal.
We want to reduce 10 billion tons of waste to the outdoors community through better sourcing, manufacturing and shipping practices. We have not ruled out helping other projects or initiatives that reduce waste in the world.
