FROM CAR CAMPING TO BACKPACKING,
A BEGINNER’S GUIDE
BY PRODUCT GEEK (AND BACKPACKER) CHRIS MOYNIHAN
1) Don’t carry more than 25% of your body weight
Limiting pack weight is something that avid backpackers obsess over. In forum after forum you can read about how hikers limit their base weight. A good rule of thumb for backpacking is to limit your pack weight to less than a third, but ideally around a quarter of your body weight maximum
2) Ditch the heavy tent for a 2-person tent
A big way to lose some weight is to limit your tent size. If your first tent came from your local big box store, chances are it’s weighing you down. A middle of the road 2 person tent will weigh somewhere between 3-4 pounds, and is perfect when you split it between two people. Hammock systems are also growing in popularity, and can be a way to lose some pounds in your pack
3) Build up to big hikes
Your first hike shouldn’t be a 10-day trip. Build some confidence in yourself and your gear over time. Test your gear out at home if you’re nervous about setting it up for the first time in the backcountry
4) Practice leave no trace
It’s just like it sounds, everything that goes with you on the way out should come with you on the way back. Be courteous to other hikers by not leaving your trash or belongings behind. For more information, visit lnt.org
5) Count the ounces and the pounds will fall
As you lay out your gear you plan to take, spend some time asking yourself honestly “Will I really use this on my trip?” you’d be surprised by how much you can leave behind and still have a positive backcountry experience
*Bonus* Bring along a small luxury item.
A special treat for the summit, a comfy pillow or a camp seat can all be small, lightweight items that make your backcountry experience special for you. (For me, it’s a tradition to bring along a soda to drink at the summit)
Our founder Che, created our entire product line. As an environmental scientist and backcountry hiker, Che had a unique insight into exactly how to take our customers further than ever before. Che said “you are in real trouble if your gear breaks out here and nothing will end your trip more quickly."
“The biggest mistake that you can make as a hiker is taking low quality gear, yeah it might be ok, if you are close to your base, but on a thru-hike or a longer trip, you depend on your gear"
With his experience as an outdoorsman he knew exactly how to liberate the outdoors to hikers through innovation and a ‘direct to customer’ business model. This model gave Che the freedom to create products and invest more into design, materials and quality.
That means our customers can get the gear they need to peak the mountain they have always wanted, or find that hidden trail because they Focus On The Trail Because We Focus On The Gear.
