Hola outdoor enthusiasts, Richard here from TNH Outdoors
I have to put out a disclaimer that I am not an American citizen and really have no political persuasion for one side or another of American politics. Instead, I am truly passionate about your outdoors lifestyle and the changes to social, environmental and economics factors that affect this.
The bottom line of the POTUS' budget proposal for American National Parks is that the Department Of Interior (DOI) the coming fiscal year would trim $1.5 billion or 12 percent from the department's budget. What proportion of this that directly effects the National Parks is unknown and instead I have taken this extract from the report
'...reduces funding for lower priority activities, such as new major acquisitions of Federal land. The budget reduces land acquisition funding by more than $120 million from the 2017 annualized CR level and would instead focus available discretionary funds on investing in, and maintaining, existing national parks, refuges and public lands.'
On first glance - a reduction of $1.5 billion or 12 percent from DOI’s budget looks massive but if the funding was put back into the essentials, could it create efficiencies and have a limited impact on your outdoor and camping lifestyle in the short term?
Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club does not agree and is simply outraged.
"If Donald Trump is actually interested in helping our parks, he should stop trying to slash their budgets to historically low levels,"
The service looks after 409 parks, 23 national scenic and historic trails and scores of rivers. It also takes care of some of the country’s most iconic monuments such as the Statue Of Liberty, the National Mall in Washington DC, and Mount Rushmore
How do you think it will affect your local national park and maybe your next family camping holiday?
There seem to be so many conversations alluding to how these budget cuts will affect your next experience in one of America's great National Parks.
I am interested to know and would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
